Around 10 000 Bulgarian women per year become victims of trafficking towards EU countries. For the last two years, 32 organized criminal groups which deal with women trafficking have been cracked down. 16 leaders have been caught. The prosecution is currently working on their cases. This became clear during a national conference on the topic.

The conference is organized by the Institute for democracy and stability in South East Europe at the invitation of Bulgaria's former foreign minister Nadejda Mihailova.

President Georgi Parvanov defined women trafficking as one of the ulcers of the society. He called for the establishment of a unified register of the victims, more security for them and change of the socio-economic conditions in Bulgaria, which provoke the trafficking of women.

According to the chief prosecutor Boris Velchev the legalization of prostitution will represent reconciliation with the exploitation of people.

The internal minister Rumen Petkov claimed that the sale of flesh in Bulgaria is a crime and should not be legalized.

Nadejda Mihailova also took a stand against legalization of prostitution because it would lead to increasing of child prostitution.
