Bulgarian Teenagers – N1 in a Vices Ranking

The Bulgarian teenagers consume alcohol the most and do sports the least. This show data from a study under the project “European cities against drugs”, presented by Momchil Vassilev, chief researcher in the National focus center for drugs and drug addictions, informs mediapool.bg.

The study is conducted in 9 European towns – Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda (Lithuania), Oslo (Norway), Reykjavik (Iceland), Riga (Latvia), St Petersberg, Sofia and Helsinki. The participants in the research are students aged 15-16.

According to the research, the teenagers in Sofia are first in “getting drunk at least once in the last month” which accounts for 33.8% of the interviewed teens. Nearly every sixth student (16.7%) gets drunk regularly. More than half of the teenagers from Sofia drink alcohol more than twice a month. The Bulgarian teenagers drink beer the most – 70.5%, while 44.9% drink hard liquor.

The boys and girls in Sofia are second in everyday use of tobacco – 32.6%. 17.3% smoke more than half a package of cigarettes average per day. 16.7% of the interviewed have claimed that they have tried cigarettes under the age of 12.  The teenagers in Oslo and Reykjavik smoke the least.

1/3 of the Bulgarian teenagers have tried drug substances more than once in their life. Thus most used drug is cannabis -30%, followed by amphetamines -8.6%, ecstasy – 5.9%, cocaine – 5.3%, heroine – 2.5% etc.

According to 7.3% of the interviewed Bulgarian teenagers, it is difficult for the young people in Bulgaria to receive care and support from their parents. However, the most dissatisfied with their parents are the teenagers in Vilnius.

According to 14.5% of the interviewed Bulgarians teenager, education is senseless. 13.6% feel bad at school and 11.5% have pointed out that they are in bad relations with their teachers. In the three categories data shows the highest percentages in Bulgaria.

In terms of sports, most students from Sofia have claimed they had never done any sport – 61.9%.
