Customs officials in Bulgaria's northern border city of Silistra will remove the barrier at the land checkpoint today. This will be their symbolic way of celebrating Bulgaria and Romania's EU accession.
The border checkpoint in Silistra stopped functioning on January 1, 2007. However, there will be no dismissals as the employees will follow the EU customs code and mobile groups will be established.
Fifteen checkpoints between Bulgaria and Greece will also fall into disuse. Customs officials there will not lose their jobs because they will be relocated to other border controls.
Bulgarians and Romanians can travel freely in the EU as there are no borders between the member states.
