"The USA will do its best for the return of the Bulgarian nurses. I'm convinced that they have to return home as soon as possible", US ambassador to Bulgaria John Beyrle said for Focus News Agency.

The ambassador and the Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ivaylo Kalfin exchanged ratification documents on changes in an agreement for mutual protection of investments.

M. Kalfin stated that the Deputy Foreign Minister Margarit Ganev would return from Libya if he is not permitted to meet with the nurses.

John Beyrle stressed that he did not see any connection between the Lockerbie case and the Bulgarian medics' case.

Mr. Kalfin described Libya's proposal for exchanging the nurses for the release of the Lockerbie terrorist as 'strange.'

He added that there was no confirmation yet of a publication in the Libya Today daily, which claims that the executive director of the Gadaffi Foundation will join the talks on the exchange.
