I don't see any reasons to think that the construction of the Bourgas-Alexandroupolis pipeline will lead to Bulgaria's energy dependency since the oil for domestic use is supplied by sea. Bulgaria will be a transit country.
This declared Bulgarian PM Sergei Stanishev, asked by the BBC Moscow correspondent whether the construction would not mean “economic, and later political dependency of Bulgaria from Russia”.
The Bourgas-Alexandroupolis pipeline project has the support not only of Russia, Bulgaria and Greece, but also that of the European Commission, reminded Stanishev and continued that the pipeline guaranteed stable supplies for the Mediterranean region, other European states and even for the USA.
Bulgaria has interest as many gas-and oil-pipelines from different sources to as many countries as possible to cross its territory. Thus the energy independence of the country can only grow, added Stanishev.
The new EU-member states from Central and Eastern Europe will not change the European Union's face, claimed the Bulgarian PM. These countries have gone tough way of reforms and changes of their mentality, they changed their attitude on many issues and established democratic systems, proven already in practice. The new countries will not change the essence and the value system of the European Union, stressed Stanishev.
I believe that we should take lessons from the history and not use it as basis for new political conflicts, replied the Prime Minister to a question about the Polish lustration law and the events with the monuments in Estonia and Hungary.
Each nation has its own way, its rise and fall. And each nation makes its conclusions, noted Stanishev.
