With Jock Palfreeman locked in a Bulgarian prison cell accused of a stabbing murder, his Sydney school mates have turned to the internet to support him. Friends were also in shock after it was revealed the 21-year-old was accused of another stabbing at a Sydney party when he was a pupil at exclusive St Ignatius' Riverview in 2004.
This morning a Facebook page set up by a school mate, titled "Jock Palfreeman is not guilty", had attracted more than 90 friends of Palfreeman.
A message on the site accompanied by a smiling Palfreeman said: "What has been reported is out of character."
Current Riverview students were among those who have joined the group while others say they were friends from his days at the school.
Details of a love affair in Athens also emerged yesterday.
Palfreeman, now a British Army recruit, was arrested last week and charged with the murder of Andrei Monov, 20, the son of a prominent Bulgarian psychotherapist as well as stabbing another man.
Police allege he admitted to the stabbing but said it was in self defence.
Yesterday, his friends told of their shock as one friend, Sara Marquis, saying: "Jock lived in an apartment with me in Athens when I was studying abroad there ... he was a great guy, very kind, and believed in standing up for his beliefs but I can't imagine he'd murder anyone."
Details also emerged through friends of a relationship Palfreeman was in with a woman in Athens.
"I lived with him in Athens. He was dating my roommate Ariel Farrar," another friend Alison Gary said.
In 2004 police investigated Palfreeman in relation to the stabbing of two Sydney teenagers at a house party of private school students in Chatswood.
James Atack, now 20, and a friend almost died in the attack and later named Palfreeman as the person who stabbed them.
However, police did not lay charges because of a lack of evidence.
If convicted of murder in Bulgaria, he could face up to life in prison. He he is also facing an attempted murder charge.
A British soccer fan was sentenced to 15 years for attempted murder in a controversial case two years ago.
Geoff Webster Clarke, who has joined the Facebook site defending Palfreeman, said he was stunned.
"So many have said such an act so extreme is very out of character," Mr Webster Clarke said.
School friend Bryce O'Brien said Palfreeman had always been friendly and involved in rowing at Riverview.
Palfreeman has pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder in a court in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.
