“The small abandoned disabled people ...” - under this title the Belgian newspaper Libre Belgique writes that Belgium intends to send an expert mission to Bulgaria after the BBC report “which shook Flanders”, informs darik.net.

After the BBC report on the 75 mentally disabled children in the Bulgarian orphanage in Mogilino was shown on many Belgian TVs many people in Flanders were indignant because the sequences didn't need any comment.

Apparently moved by the report, the TV journalist Chris Dussochois engaged personally with the case and attracted the political class and the media in the northern part of Belgium. It should be said that in the last 15 years the Flemish show themselves as very sensitive regarding the cares for mentally and physically disabled people and fund around 20 projects, informs Libre Belgique.

According to the newspaper the Belgian federal and regional authorities have decided to send this Sunday experts to Bulgaria, who “to investigate at the spot the situation before any structural measures to be taken”.

Around 50 000 EUR, given from the budget for “preventive diplomacy” of the Ministry of foreign affairs will help for the initiating of a special project. According to the speaker of the minister of social affairs Lorette Onkelix “it is not about giving lessons but about giving a hand” by expressing “European solidarity, help for the exchange of good practices and support the municipalities which have financial difficulties”.

While Bulgaria was negotiating for EU accession, several times the country was pointed for its attitude to the orphans and the people with disabilities as well as for the conditions of living in the social homes, writes Libre Belgique.

Unfortunately, Bulgaria is not a rich country, not yet, cites the newspaper a statement by the Bulgarian ambassador in Belgium Hristo Georgiev, who has expressed his worry that “the idea about Bulgaria among the Belgian people could be connected only with the BBC movie”.

According to a Belgian diplomat there are efforts in Bulgaria for improving the conditions for the people with disabilities after the country entered the EU, but “this costs money”.
