Here you will find the latest articles, news, interviews and comments from today's Bulgarian press:

The Trud daily

"Even Brussels understood that we are an island of stability", "Trud" commented. Reason for this is the major motive of the opposition for the demanded non-confidence vote - instead of economic prosperity, the government put the country in a energy, financial and economic crisis. To announce Bulgaria a country in crisis, which reports for the last quarter of 2008  3,6% increase of GDP and 6% for the entire year, a decent budget surplus, increasing fiscal and currency reserve, a stable currency and an increase of real income, is to say the least, not serious. Undoubtedly there is a shrinkage of the economy, but this is not proof that the country is in a recession. The economic commission in Brussels, in its yearly assessment presents the financial policy in Bulgaria as an island of stability in the crisis-stricken Europe. The recommendation to the country is emphatic - to continue its current policy.

"Europe wants you to protect her interests", Alessandro Butticé underlines in an interview for "Trud". Moreover: " The fight with frauds and corruption cannot end only in a couple of days. Time is needed for us to see whether what the government promises will be applied in practice. At the moment we are seeing only the enormous responsibility, which was undertook by it. You should know that the international community needs to be sure that the interests of the European taxpayer are being protected through real investigations, which yield results".

The 24 chasa daily

"OLAF sends us the bill on four investigations", "24 chasa" writes. OLAF has ended four investigations for abuses in Bulgaria. Brussels has sent final reports together with a demand for restoration of the funds, which have been proven to be abused, to the European budget. A part of them has been connected to incorrectly gathered customs duties, which are to be returned to Brussels.

"The time has come for an East European to head NATO", under this heading "24 chasa" comments a number of famous applications for Secretary General of NATO, among which that of Solomon Pasi. "After a number of rounds of enlargement, the biggest military union in the world is ready for a Secretary General from a country - former member of the Warsaw Pact. In the end, East Europeans represent almost a half of the North Atlantic club of 26. Bulgaria rushed and now officially offered its ex Foreign Minister Solomon Pasi. Its biggest drawback is that because of corruption and organized crime his country has a bad name of being the "bad child" in NATO, as well as in the EU. Another drawback is that Bulgaria is in the alliance only since 2004 and is the youngest member. Sofia must go to the end of the queue."

The Sega daily

"The prosecutor's office started working against sponsors of the authority", "Sega" informs. The prosecutor's office tightened the grip around two of the sponsors of the political authority and major players in OLAF reports - Mario Nikolov and Lyudmil Stoykov. Nikolov, who finances BSP and is under trial for the draining of 7.5 million Euro from SAPARD, is being checked up for more abuses with European funds after a signal by OLAF. After nearly two years of investigations, the case for money laundering against the President's sponsor Stoykov has ended and soon  will be submitted in court, Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev announced.
