The number one chess player in the world ranking list Veselin Topalov is to face a new challenge in the Netherlands. On 17 January 2007, the Bulgarian will play chess...on a radio programme.
The show is organized as part of the super tournament "Corus" in Wijk aan Zee, which he won last year. Listeners to the local radio station "Radio 1" will be able to suggests chess moves against Topalov for an hour live on air.
Last year, Vesselin played with chess figures made of glass in the Netherlands. Fourteen chess players will take part in the tournament. The games start on 13 January in thirteen different rounds. Vladimir Kramnik from Russia and Viswanathan Anand from India.
This is where Kramnik and Topalov will meet again. Kramnik beat Topalov in Elista but there is still much controversy surrounding the match.
"Vesko is preparing for the match and will do his best to defend his title in the Netherlands," Topalov's manager said in a special interview for topsport.
"Ivan Cheperinov was ill but is starting to recover no and will be with the team. We are leaving for Wijk aan Zee early morning on January 12," Silvio Danailov added.
He said that bank deposits for the re-match will be send to FIDE's headquarters next week.
Directors of the tournaments will meet in Wijk aan Zee on 16 and 17 January where they will discuss whether to organize a special Big Helmet tournament in classic chess. These will include M-tel Masters, Linares (Mexico) and Corus.
