Benita Ferrero Waldner: A Day of Joy

“Welcome home”. This repeated several times in his speech deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs Ivaylo Kalfin at Sofia airport during the welcoming of Kristiana Valcheva, Nasia Nenova, Valentina Siropulo, Valia Cherveniashka, Snejana Dimitrova, Zdravko Georgiev and the Palestinian doctor Ashraf al-Hadjudj.

Our compatriots are in Bulgaria at last, were the Minister's first words.

Ivaylo Kalfin expressed gratitude to all those who have assisted in the achievement of this success and have shown their real solidarity. Kalfin expressed special gratitude to the European commissioner Benita ­Ferrero-Waldner and to the wife of the French president Cecilia Sarkozy. Minister Kalfin wished to the Bulgarian people in the future such causes not to be the issue unifying tha nation.

European commissioner Waldner also gave a salutary speech. According to her this day of joy and success for the all Bulgarians has been achieved due to the combined efforts of the EU. However, Waldner underlined the special role of France in the last decisive moment. “Today we are experiencing an extraordinary day in Bulgaria, which member of the EU for several months”, said Waldner. The European commissioner added that today a new page in the EU-Libyan relations is opened.

The general secretary of the French president office Claude Gueant who accompanied the French first lady during her visit in Libya, reminded that the release of the Bulgarian medics from the Libyan prison was a promise of the newly elected French president. This is a promise for the observation of the human right for freedom. Claude Gueant added that the engagement of the European countries towards the children in Libya having AIDS was also part of the observation of this right.

“I want to thank the Libyan authorities who understood our humanitarian arguments. A new page in the relations with Libya has been opened”, said Gueant.
