Regional meeting of Organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons opens in Sofia

The Bulgarian minister of economy and energy Peter Dimitrov will open today the Eight regional meeting of the national bodies of the countries members in the East European group of the Organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons (OPCW), informed the press center of the ministry.
The general director of OPCW, ambassador Rohelio Pfirter will attend the opening of the event.
Bulgaria’s national body for implementation of the Convention for prohibition of the elaboration, production, piling and use of chemical weapons and for its destruction is the Interdepartmental committee for export control and non-distribution of weapons for mass destruction. Its chairman is the minister of economy and energy and members are representatives of the minister of economy, minister of foreign affairs, minister of defense and the State agency on national security.
The Convention for prohibition of the elaboration, production, piling and use of chemical weapons and its destruction is a multilateral contract and its introduction has big contribution for the international peace and security through the elimination of the existing reserves of chemical weapons and the ban for acquisition or use of chemical weapons.
The convention is open for signing from 13 October 1993. By April 2009 the countries – members of OPCW are 188.
OPCW is an independent, inter-governmental organization, the aim of which is the complete chemical disarmament and the international cooperation in the field of peaceful chemistry.
The choice of Bulgaria for host of the Eight regional meeting of the national bodies of the countries – members of the East European group of the OPCW is recognition of the active policy, which Bulgaria follows in the field of non-distribution of the weapons for mass destruction.
